How to program the SureFlap chip correctly?

The SureFlap microchipped cat door is a great way to allow your feline pet free access in and out of your home while preventing unwanted visits from other animals. Follow these steps to program your cat's chip into the SureFlap door:

 

Step 1: Getting information about your cat's microchip

Before you begin, you need to know your cat's unique microchip identifier. This identifier is unique to each animal and consists of a numerical code. If you do not know how to obtain this identifier, contact your veterinarian who should have this information.

 

Microchip type

The SureFlap pet door with microchip is compatible with all microchips commonly used for pets. These specifically include:

• 15 digit microchips (also known as FDXB)
• 10 digit microchips (also known as FDXA and Trovan® Unique)
• 9 digit microchips (also known as Avid® Secure/Encrypted)

In addition, this pet door is also compatible with the SureFlap RFID collar tag (one included - sets of two sold separately).

 

Step 1: Learning mode

In order to start using the SureFlap pet door with a microchip, you need to train it to your pet's unique microchip ID code. This process only needs to be done once for each animal as the code is permanently stored, even when the batteries are removed. Follow the simple step-by-step instructions below to complete this process:

1. Remove the button cover. Press the teach button (cat head) for about 1 second and release. 
2. The locks will open and allow the animal to pass in both directions. Another indication that the unit is in teach mode is the flashing of the icons on the LCD display.
3. The next animal that walks through the door from either direction or puts its head in the tunnel with its snout facing the door will have its microchip number stored in memory.
4. Once the animal's microchip number has been successfully learned, the door will return to normal operation and the LCD display will stop flashing. Once the animal moves away from the door, the locks will close.

Repeat the process for more animals until all animals have been microchipped. Up to 32 different animals can have their microchip numbers stored in memory. When the learning process for all animals is complete, replace the button cover.

This learning method is especially handy for uncooperative animals! Instead of looking for the animal and trying to get it to come through the door, you can simply set the learning mode and leave it that way until the animal decides to come through or put its head in the door of its own accord.

To cancel the training mode (e.g. after accidentally pressing the training button), simply press the training button (cat head) again for about 1 second and the unit will return to normal operation.

 

Step 3: Testing and Verification

After successfully programming your cat's chip into the SureFlap door, it's important to test that everything is working properly. Allow your cat to enter and exit the door to ensure that her microchip is detected and that the door responds correctly to her presence.

Remember that each type of SureFlap door may have slightly different programming procedures. Always follow the instructions for use and programming included with the SureFlap door or available on the manufacturer's website. If you encounter difficulties, do not be afraid to contact the manufacturer's customer support for assistance and support.

 

 

Battery and low battery light

The SureFlap pet door with microchip requires four Type C batteries. Under normal use, one set of batteries will normally last at least 6 months. There is a compartment for two batteries on each side of the pet door. The batteries must be inserted with the negative pole facing up. When installing the batteries, insert the first battery first and push into the top of the compartment. Hold this battery in place, insert the second battery and push down. After inserting the batteries, allow the unit to sit still for about 10 seconds before allowing the animal to enter the tunnel; this will allow the electronic sensors to tune properly. We recommend using high quality alkaline batteries with the SureFlap microchip pet door for the longest life. When using rechargeable batteries, select customer mode two.

Programming the SureFlap microchipped cat door is a relatively simple process, and once successfully set up, you can rest assured that your cat will have safe and convenient access to your home while unauthorized visitors remain outside.
